Building as bridge
Sited in Ithaca, NY between the weekend farmers’ market, science center, music venue, and residential block, the scheme attempts to provide new program underground to link and “bridge” the existing typologies in the vicinity. By strategically reconciling the existing highway and train line, the intervention is sunken, providing access to Cascadilla Creek and new pedestrian pathways. A cafe, restaurant, bar, arcade, and public library consider visitor fluctuations from day to night.
The scheme’s relationship to the site is twofold; it is both underneath the highway street level and adjacent to a body of water. These two conditions create a complex figure/ground relationship of being embedded and simultaneously exposed to the waterfront.
