In order to better the designer, one must better develop their tools. The desk is a creative’s headquarters; a place for both the conception of ideas and the project’s production and execution. By facilitating this relationship between desk and student, workflow and output can be enhanced.

Furniture in this sense is a machine and becomes an extension of the body itself. By combining these concepts of functionality, ergonomics and tectonics, the desk can prove its usefulness over the course of an architectural semester.

DECONSTRUCTION / RECONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Data collection ensured a scientific understanding of the problem; student surveys were printed, cut, and distributed to the 384 students enrolled in the B.Arch and M.Arch programs. Aiming to understand the quintessential behavior of a desk, the survey proposed new features, asked participants to rate their current desk space, the surrounding environment as well as amenity proximity.

Based on the results of the survey, several features were incorporated into the design. Integrating a light-table, cutting station, drawing space and book storage, the desk aims to organize its user. Constructed with no glue, the desk can fully disassemble and can be packed flat for easy transportation or transplanting.
