tiber river redevelopment

In observance of the natural character, topography and conditions of this riverfront site, the scheme aims to provide new occupiable and programmed “ground-planes” as well as a revamping of the site’s pedestrian, retail, and bicycle circulations. By a series of folds and extensions, new surfaces register the site’s elevational opportunity as spaces for market, garden, and retail program. An emphasis on site linearity is communicated through long pathways and a network of strip gardens that occupy multiple levels. In addition to the intervention within the river bank, a proposed pedestrian bridge links the Trastevere to the Testaccio side, reaching other urban generators such as the Villa Sciarra and Roma Tre University, respectively.

PROJECT ELEVATION

Pedestrian and bicycle circulations drive the interplay of surfaces, creating an upper level that supports the current Trastevere weekend market, a middle level that contains underground retail and restaurants, and a lower level dedicated to pathways directly on the waterfront.
